A woman's guide to solo travel and how to survive it

British, Austrian, Czech and French sound systems gathered each summer in the huge technovals. Then came a big solo travel moment. I found some friendly-looking people and asked if I could travel with them – they were English and German and had a small sound system called Alien Pulse. When we’re younger, we’re a simple shape and we fit with other simple shapes, then we turn into more complex shapes when we grow older. I suddenly became aware of this network around the squats and the music venues – anyone who wanted to be creative ended up in a squat – so I felt held by that community and more able to travel solo.’
